Abstract

Purpose

No adequate study on scientific analysis of surface metal fiber (SMF) arrangement of electromagnetic shielding fabric (EMSF) and influence on shielding effectiveness (SE) is available at present.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper recognizes the SMF region and constructs a binary feature matrix according to edge condition, width condition and gray condition using the computer image analysis technique based on the construction of the surface digitized image of the EMSF. Three parameters of coverage, dispersion and uniformity are proposed to describe the SMF arrangement. Then experiments and testing samples are designed to analyze the relationship between the three parameters and the SE.

Findings

Results show that the proposed method can accurately recognize the SMF of the EMSF, the coverage, dispersion and uniformity can describe three aspects of the SMF arrangement of percentage content, porosity and orientation, and the three parameters are positively, negatively and positively correlated to the SE, respectively.

Originality/value

The research in this paper provides the basis for further description of the SMF arrangement of the EMSF, possesses the significance for the study of the shielding mechanism, transmission model, electromagnetic performance and rapid non-destructive evaluation of the EMSF and provide a new idea for the study on the shielding theory and application of the EMSF.

Abstract

Purpose

To solve the problem of low sensitivity of traditional capacitive proximity sensor, this paper aims to propose a novel capacitive sensor for detection of an approaching conductor.

Design/methodology/approach

Five capacitive proximity sensors with different structures are designed and the performance is compared with the traditional capacitive sensor. The impacts of geometrical parameters on the performance of the proposed capacitive sensor are studied. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the proposed capacitive sensor to an approaching conductor with different sizes is discussed. Also, how the designed capacitive sensor is sensitive to the lateral placement of the approaching object is analyzed.

Findings

Several capacitive proximity sensor structures have been designed and analyzed. It is found that the capacitive sensor with the top small ring-bottom large ring structure shows stronger electric field distribution around the top electrode and higher sensitivity to the approaching conductor than other sensors. Through further analysis of the proposed sensor, the results demonstrate that proposed capacitive sensor is effective for proximity object detection.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a novel capacitive proximity sensor with top small ring-bottom large ring structure. Compared with the traditional capacitive sensor, the proposed capacitive sensor is more sensitive to the approaching object. This would be helpful for the accurate detection of the approaching object. Also, the top and bottom electrodes are much smaller.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explain the direct and moderating effects of perceived transparency on citizen satisfaction with public healthcare services.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper extends the classic framework of service quality, value and satisfaction by adding perceived transparency as an essential component, applies service-dominant logic to develop hypotheses regarding the effects of transparency and empirically tests the extended framework with secondary household survey data on China’s public healthcare.

Findings

The classic framework of service quality, value and satisfaction that originated from the private sector is robust in public service. Perceived transparency has a positive impact on perceived value and citizen satisfaction, but the positive effects of service quality and perceived value on citizen satisfaction were weakened with the increasing level of perceived transparency.

Research limitations/implications

Perceived transparency is a double-edged sword regarding citizen satisfaction: although transparency increases perceived value and satisfaction by enhancing citizens’ service co-creation and inspiring citizen confidence, increased transparency raises citizens’ expectations for service products, which subsequently dampens the positive effects of service quality and perceived value on citizen satisfaction.

Practical implications

In a context with higher transparency, local authorities must learn to manage citizen expectations that influence satisfaction, and increase the probability of satisfaction by avoiding too high citizen expectations.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the importance of transparency in enhancing public service co-creation, and contributes a novel perspective on the effects of transparency in the formation of citizen satisfaction, which may serve as the starting point for studying the role of transparency in public affairs.

Abstract

Purpose

With the development of artificial intelligence, proximity sensors show their great potential in intelligent perception. This paper aims to propose a new planar capacitive sensor for the proximity sensing of a conductor.

Design/methodology/approach

Different from traditional structures, the proposed sensor is characterized by sawtooth-structured electrodes. A series of numerical simulations have been carried out to study the impact of different geometrical parameters such as the width of the main trunk, the width of the sawtooth and the number of sawtooths. In addition, the impact of the lateral offset of the approaching graphite block is investigated.

Findings

It is found that sensitivity is improved with the increase of the main trunk with, sawtooth width and sawtooth number while a larger lateral offset leads to a decrease in sensitivity. The performance of the proposed planar capacitive proximity sensor is also compared with two conventional planar capacitive sensors. The results show that the proposed planar capacitive sensor is obviously more sensitive than the two conventional planar capacitive sensors.

Originality/value

In this paper, a new planar capacitive sensor is proposed for the proximity sensing of a conductor. The results show that the capacitive sensor with the novel structure is obviously more sensitive than the traditional structures in the detection of the proximity conductor.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to pioneer an innovative approach for the evaluation of government portal websites (GPWs) by introducing an eye-tracking-based method. The research meticulously pinpoints and analyses the distinct usability issues and challenges that users encounter while navigating and interacting with GPWs.

Design/methodology/approach

This study devises an eye-tracking-based GPW usability evaluation approach, which focuses on the major functions (i.e. government information disclosure, government services and interactive responses) of GPWs. An Entropy Weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (EW-TOPSIS) method is employed to process eye-tracking indicator results for deriving GPW usability results.

Findings

The proposed approach is demonstrated to assess the usability of 12 GPWs in pilot smart cities in China, and it is found that most GPWs have lower-than-average usability. GPWs with low usability require more cognitive load that exhibit increased fixation and saccade. The comparisons among the GPW usability results from (1) the eye-tracking experiment, (2) questionnaire surveys and (3) the ready-made performance evaluation report validate the effectiveness of eye-tracking-based GPW usability evaluation.

Originality/value

The work contributes to shifting the GPW usability evaluation approach from a subjective judgment paradigm to an objective paradigm, as well as provides implications for enhancing GPW usability, including improving search function, reducing website complexity and prioritizing user needs.

Abstract

Purpose

A crucial decision in financial services is how to classify credit or loan applicants into good and bad applicants. The purpose of this paper is to propose a four-stage hybrid data mining approach to support the decision-making process.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is inspired by the bagging ensemble learning method and proposes a new voting method, namely two-level majority voting in the last stage. First some training subsets are generated. Then some different base classifiers are tuned and afterward some ensemble methods are applied to strengthen tuned classifiers. Finally, two-level majority voting schemes help the approach to achieve more accuracy.

Findings

A comparison of results shows the proposed model outperforms powerful single classifiers such as multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine, logistic regression (LR). In addition, it is more accurate than ensemble learning methods such as bagging-LR or rotation forest (RF)-MLP. The model outperforms single classifiers in terms of type I and II errors; it is close to some ensemble approaches such as bagging-LR and RF-MLP but fails to outperform them in terms of type I and II errors. Moreover, majority voting in the final stage provides more reliable results.

Practical implications

The study concludes the approach would be beneficial for banks, credit card companies and other credit provider organisations.

Originality/value

A novel four stages hybrid approach inspired by bagging ensemble method proposed. Moreover the two-level majority voting in two different schemes in the last stage provides more accuracy. An integrated evaluation criterion for classification errors provides an enhanced insight for error comparisons.

Abstract

Purpose

Psychological ownership has been a topic of intense debate for several decades, especially in the digital era. In addition, as part of the digital public domain, virtual communities shape our digital lives. Unfortunately, few studies have examined the communication process in virtual communities from the perspective of psychological ownership. Moreover, information and organization are key aspects of virtual communities. This research aimed to explore the impact of psychological ownership on communication satisfaction from these two perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

I collected 471 responses using a questionnaire. In terms of empirical methods, I developed a structural equation model (SEM) to examine the relationship between psychological ownership and communication satisfaction as well as the mechanism underlying this relationship – namely, information behavior. Specifically, I first examined the relationship between psychological ownership and information behavior. I then developed a comprehensive framework for the double-edged impact of psychological ownership in virtual communities on communication satisfaction.

Findings

I found that psychological ownership has a double-edged effect on communication satisfaction based on two types of information behavior in virtual communities. Specifically, organization-based psychological ownership (OPO) positively influences communication satisfaction through information exchange. In contrast, information-based psychological ownership (IPO) negatively impacts communication satisfaction through information-hiding.

Originality/value

The findings of this research demonstrate that psychological ownership has a double-edged effect on communication satisfaction. First, the findings of this study reveal the downsides of psychological ownership, which are not consistent with its beneficial role. Second, the negative effect of psychological ownership with regard to communication in virtual communities also helps explain communication failure in virtual communities. Finally, despite the downsides of psychological ownership in the context of a virtual community revealed by this study, this factor has an overall beneficial effect.
